Vancouver 2010 Party :: Livecity Yaletown :: Thur. Feb. 11-28

February 05, 2010

The family oriented party spot of Vancouver 2010 will be Livecity Yaletown, without a doubt. There will be concerts every night that include DJ Spooky on Feb. 15, Keisha Cante on Feb. 18, a ridiculous Deadmau5 appearance on Feb. 20, Damian Marley on Feb. 24 and Blue rodeo on Feb.27. Are you kidding me??? When the massive crowds are actually able to focus on the sporting events, big screen tvs with live feeds, highlights and commentary will be provided while refreshments and sustinance will give little reason to leave Livecity Yaletown for the length of the competition. This is a non-alcoholic partying must. Open to the Public Corner of George and Beatty, Vancouver, BC

HIM :: Commodore Ballroom :: Fri. Apr. 16

January 28, 2010

Whatever these guys are called: alternative, hard rock, metal, love metal, there'll always be one umbrella term that defines these Finns best: crap. -D.P. Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3, Canada Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

April Wine :: Commodore Ballroom :: Sat. Apr. 24

January 29, 2010

Classic Rock band April Wine seem to be showing no signs of showing down. For those of you born after 1989 and don't know who these guys are, just ask your dad. He'll roll his eyes at you, but eventually, he'll answer. It's not that April Wine's not an appealing band to the younger generation, it's that the younger generation is too caught up with stupid techno/indie/new age garbage. Create a parent-child bonding time around bands like April Wine. -NB April Wine Commodore Ballroom 868 Granville Street Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3 (604) 739-4550 Tickets $32.50-$100 Tickets to April Wine at Commodore Ballroom

DJ Starting From Scratch :: Boss Nightclub :: Fri. Feb. 19

February 08, 2010

While Vancouver 2010 fans will likely be flooding the gates at Gossip and Fabric for the after party dance offs and throw downs, there are certainly some scrumptious options around town for those looking away from the blockbuster events. DJ Starting From Scratch is legendary for working crowds into a frenzy and he's, consequently, become Boss Nightclub's poster boy for Vancouver 2010. This will be big air in DJ Starting From Scratch's career. Tickets are $20 @ Ticket Loot 1320 Richards Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

El Perro Del Mar :: Biltmore Cabaret :: Sat. Feb. 27

December 30, 2009

Twee pop princess El Perro Del Mar is one of those delightful little things from Sweden who, unlike many of her contemporaries, has been able to stay relevant for longer than it takes to write a blog post. -D.P. Biltmore Cabaret, 395 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC V5T 3J7‎ Tickets can be found @ Ticketweb

Jason Collett :: Biltmore Cabaret :: Fri. Mar. 26

February 17, 2010

Formerly a member of Toronto supergroup Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett has decided, for quite some time now, to pursue his solo career. And it's paid off. Out of all the solo BSS projects, his is definitely one of the few to really take off. His hybrid alt-country/country-indie sound has gotten him signed to the prestigious Arts & Crafts label, and has taken him around the world. While some may find his music too rustic or whiskey-ish (a good way to describe it), he has a legion of fans, and now, at the Biltmore Cabaret, it's your chance to find out if you're enlisting. -D.P. Biltmore Cabaret, 395 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC V5T 3J7 Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Jermaine Dupri :: Pop Opera :: Tue. Feb. 23

February 08, 2010

In what is no doubt the most hilarious appearance, and in the bad you're a joke way, of Vancouver 2010 is the Jermaine Dupri sighting at Pop Opera. Jermaine Dupri's relevancy in hip hop ran out so long ago he was likely barred from performing at Turin or Salt Lake City. The real slap in the face here are the Olympic priced tickets, for $50 each, while not even coming close to being an Olympic sized event. For those of you desperate enough to see the fallen platinum artist (miraculously) clearly money ain't a thing. Tickets are available are $50 Club Zone 686 West Hastings Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Mark Farina :: Ginger 62 Cocktail Den :: Wed. Feb. 24

February 08, 2010

With all the big name athletes and performers gathering at Vancouver 2010 for the games, it should come as no surprise that the king of mushroom jazz, Mark Farina himself has been booked at Ginger 62 Cocktail Den. The Mushroom Jazz collection is a staple hold of any house music fan's collection and Mark Farina will no doubt throw down a set of Olympic sized proportions. While most of the major names throughout the games are demanding $50+, Mark Farina's modestly priced $30 set should be one of the steals of Vancouver 2010. Tickets are $30 Club Zone 1219 Granville Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Paul Oakenfold :: Garfinkels :: Wed. Feb. 17

February 08, 2010

Garfinkels continues their championship display of international DJs by bringing in British super genius, Paul Oakenfold, up the Whistler alpines. Party people better save some of their Vancouver 2010 energy for what will no doubt be one of the gold medal extra curricular experiences of the Games. Tickets are $60 @ Club Zone #1-4308 Main Street, Whistler (Whislter Village) BC

Theory of a Deadman :: Place Stadium :: Fri. Feb. 19

February 11, 2010

You'd think with the way Theory of a Deadman plays music, they're trying to be Nickelback. And to a certain extent, they've succeeded; people hate them almost as much as they do the latter. The sound is typical generic 'rock and roll', and it never once feels like what this guy's talking about is actually true; it's as much scripted as it is painful to listen to. You're far better off saving your fifty bucks for something that's actually worthwhile during the Olympics. -D.P. Place Stadium, 777 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver, BC Tickets can be found @ 1-800-tickets

Our Lady Peace :: Whistler Medals Plaza :: Wed. Feb. 17

February 11, 2010

I would do horrible things to Our Lady Peace. And I'm not talking about the same kind of horrible things I would do to Scarlett Johansson. Frankly, the band has demonstrated no quality in output since that one single We Are All Innocent, and even that was nothing more than a passing fancy of early adolescence for most. Their music is bland, their lyrics are banal, and worst of all, their comportment is simply atrocious and completely out of sync with what they actually are. Simply put, Our Lady Peace is the equivalent of a dog chasing after its tail; funny to look at, but pitiful to think about. -D.P. Whistler Medals Plaza, 40-4314 Main Street, Whistler, BC V0N 1B4, Canada Tickets can be found @ Vancouver 2010

Paul Oakenfold :: Red Room :: Sat. Feb. 20

February 08, 2010

Red Room breaks out a championship display of international DJs by bringing in British super genius, Paul Oakenfold, into the Vancouver 2010 party competition. Party people better save some of their Vancouver 2010 energy for what will no doubt be one of the gold medal extra curricular experiences of the Games. Tickets are $60-85 @ Club Zone 398 Richards Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Calvin Harris :: Celebrities Nightclub :: Fri. Feb. 26

February 04, 2010

While the athletes will be battling it out on ice, sleet and snow at Vancouver 2010, Celebrities Nightclub and Gossip Nightclub appear to be holding their own competition of sorts. Calvin Harris, is on the short list of world renowned disc spinners that have merited themselves invitations to play at, what are looking like, the cool party places of the games. While Benni Bennassi, Armin Van Buuren and MSTRKRFT have all booked slots earlier in the event, it could well be Calvin Harris that runs away with the gold. The King of Electropop is still riding the success of '09's Ready for the Weekend and he appears to be building a steady stream of momentum. Calvin Harris has proven that, like any fine athlete, he relishes on the big stage and what stage could be bigger than one of the host Olympic cities' craziest clubs. Tickets are $55 @ Club Zone 1022 Davie Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Karen Fowlie :: Plaza of Nations :: Wed. Feb. 17, 24

February 11, 2010

For many, Karen Fowlie will come across as cheesy in her messages against bullying and the human spirit. That's because they are. Luckily for her, she has the talent to sing about paint drying and still develop a following. Perhaps that's why she has booked herself center stage for a couple Wednesdays in a row on the Olympics Plaza of Nations Stage. In a dramatic atmosphere, such as the Olympics, that voice is bound to shine. Open to Public 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver BC

Neil Young Project :: Queen Elizabeth Theatre :: Feb. 18 - Feb. 19

February 11, 2010

In a celebration of Neil Young, legendary producer Hal Willner presides over a slew of performers as they pay tribute to the Canadian giant. An all-star band led by members of Broken Social Scene plays host to such other noteworthy figures as Ron Sexsmith, Vashti Bunyan, Iron and Wine, and Lou Reed. Yes, Lou Reed. -D.P. Queen Elizabeth Theatre, West Georgia Street & Hamilton St, Vancouver, BC‎ Tickets can be found @ 1-800-tickets

Nickelback :: GM Place :: Thu. June 3, 2010

February 03, 2010

I was watching MTV and they were harping on one of the girls for liking the soft-rock with a little friz, band. She kept saying "I love Nickelback and all you closet fans come out and support." Clearly there are an abundance of fans, and clearly the group is doing something musically pleasing, yet the leather-hip huggers continue to be a guilty pleasure, that just makes you feel guilty, doesn't it Chad? -K.K. Tickets are available @ Ticket City 800 Griffiths Way Vancouver, BC

DJ Heather :: Ginger 62 Cocktail Den :: Wed. Feb. 17

February 08, 2010

While Vancouver 2010 fans will likely be flooding the gates at Gossip and Fabric for the after party dance offs and throw downs, there are certainly some scrumptious options around town for those looking away from the blockbuster events. DJ Heather hardly lives up to the Armin Van Buurens and Benny Benassis that will be appearing at the larger venues, but a solid arsenal of house and dance music should be able to ease the minds of those missing out on the household name parties. Tickets are $20 @ Ticket Loot 1219 Granville Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

DJ Jazzy Jeff :: Boss Nightclub :: Fri. Feb. 26

February 08, 2010

It's been years since Uncle Phil was giving Jazz the boot out of the Banks estate, but DJ Jazzy Jeff is still one of the most reliable DJs in hip hop. The respect he still garnishes is emphasized by Boss Nightclub setting him up for a session on the final Friday of Vancouver 2010. Long gone are the days of the super team composed of himself and Will Smith that helped establish Will Smith as a pop icon, but the legend of DJ Jazzy Jeff still remains and no better time to see why than during Vancouver 2010. Tickets are $30 @ Club Zone 1320 Richards Street, Vancouver (Downtown) BC

Armin Van Buuren :: Garfinkels :: Mon. Feb. 22

February 08, 2010

Devastating Dutch DJ, Armin Van Buuren, has topped just about every DJ ranking on the planet, so it should be no surprise that he's favoured to blow the roof off of the Olympics on several different nights during Vancouver 2010. Garfinkels is the priveledged establishment on this evening and a record breaking by Armin Van Burren is certainly not out of the question. Tickets are $65 @ Club Zone #1-4308 Main Street, Whistler (Whislter Village) BC

Olympic Concert Series :: LiveCity Yaletown :: Feb 13-26

February 04, 2010

The only thing more lively than the Olympics itself are what the non-athlete's are doing in their off-time. In two weeks, there are so many free concerts going on, your head is going to spin. Every artist from Wilco to Sam Roberts to Blue Rodeo to Hot Hot Heat to Great Big Sea will be doing live performances. Oh, and did I mention they're free? -NB Atlantic Canada House Olympic Concert Series LiveCity Yaletown Tickets: Free

Serena Maneesh :: Media Club :: Saturday, March. 27

February 01, 2010

Take Metric, add talent, and you have Serena Maneesh. This Norwegian bombshell group won’t be an up-and-coming for much longer…they’re pretty much there. Go see them while their concert tickets are still only $14, before their scandals are being overshadowed by their musical talent, and before they’re the guest on Live @ Much and for some reason seem lame after. Serena Maneesh Media Club 695 Cambie Street Vancouver, BC V6B 2P1 (604) 608-2871 Tickets for Serena-Maneesh Tickets $14

-D.P. Against Me! :: Rickshaw Theatre :: Saturday Mar. 27

February 01, 2010

With song titles like Pints of Guinness Make Me Strong and You Look Like I Need a Drink, you can only imagine how catchy the songs of Against Me! are. The lead singers rough and loud voice combined with catchy guitar that sounds like it’s hard, but is actually bouncy and fun, you’ve got one recipe for a great live concert. Against Me! will be teaming up with Cancer Bats and Jaguar Love… I know, the headliners are never as good as the main course, but sometimes ya can’t have it all. -NB Against Me! Cancer Bats Jaguar Love at Rickshaw Theatre 254 East Hastings Street Vancouver, BC V6A (604) 240-5984 Tickets to Against Me! at Rickshaw Theatre Tickets $20

Dubfire :: Gossip :: Mon. Feb. 22

February 05, 2010

Gossip Nighclub has completely solidified itself as the throw down dance off extravaganza spot of Vancouver 2010. It would be hard pressed to find a lineup in Canadian club history to match the two week turntable massacre that Gossip has is in store for the world. Gossip has clearly put a gold medal in partying at their forefront and if you've ever wanted to write off 14 days with furious non-stop celebration, this is what you've been training for. The Olympic sized prices will be well worth getting down with the world's most dedicated partiers. One half of Deep Dish, Dubfire, will surely deep fry your cerebellum with his signature dark house/techno sound. Tickets are $25 @ Club Zone 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver BC

Constantines :: Ontario Pavilion :: Fri. Feb. 19

February 11, 2010

Constantines have come a long way since they first started; they've been on the touring circuit with indie's bigger players, have signed to the ever-so-popular Arts & Crafts label, and have been critically acclaimed for their last album Kensington Heights. It's taken 11 years, but these guys are finally getting somewhere, and while the Ontario Pavilion might not do them justice, it's still nice for the Guelph kids' indie rock sound to get some more exposure. And plus, it's free. -D.P. Ontario Pavilion, 1455 Quebec St., Vancouver, BC V6A 3Z7

Jason Collett :: Biltmore Cabaret :: Fri. Mar. 26

Steve Aoki tosses out some of the hardest DJ sets around and women in the front row, I hope you like Grey Goose. Tickets are $55 @ Club Zone 750 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver BC

OneRepublic :: Whistler Medals Plaza :: Sun. Feb. 21

February 11, 2010

I sincerely forgot all about OneRepublic. Apologize was a great single, really great. But hey, we all knew from the start that, no matter how hard they tried, they'd always be a one-hit wonder. So regardless of how good their other songs are (nothing special), you'll inevitably be spending $50 to hear a single song. And also, hasn't the time for that hit already passed? Come on, we have new one hit-wonders. -D.P. Whistler Medals Plaza, 40-4314 Main Street, Whistler, BC V0N 1B4 Tickets can be found by calling 1-800-tickets

Merle Haggard :: Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre :: Sat. Mar. 13

Deadmau5 :: Whistler Medals Plaza :: Thu. Feb. 18

February 11, 2010

It's impressive that the Olympic Committee landed someone like Deadmau5. Frankly, I have a hard time believing he actually agreed to play at the Olympics. Why you ask? Because he's an artist of actual merit, of creative integrity, and of a certain amount of worth that seems to be lacking in the majority of his fellow-performers. Expect a mixture of progressive trance, alternative techno, and plenty of "Oh my God, did he actually just do that?". He's a wonder to witness, and somehow, the Olympic board has picked up on this and has justly decided to charge $50 for the show. -D.P. Whistler Medals Plaza, 40-4314 Main Street, Whistler, BC V0N 1B4, Canada Tickets can be found @ Vancouver 2010

Olympik Sessions :: Fabric :: Thu. Feb. 11-28

February 05, 2010

Fabric appears to be Gossip's greatest competition for the gold in terms of hardcore partying at Vancouver 2010. While Gossip, unsurprisingly, has soaked up many of the world's greatest DJs like a thirsty sponge, Fabric has been granted the services of infamous turntablists and hip hop DJs from around the globe. While Canada's top DJs are slated to kick off the party Thu. Feb. 11, 12 shows are scheduled in 18 nights to ensure the party runs smoother than a Swiss toboggan run. Highlights of the head nodding explosion include: Kaya Jones on Sun. Feb. 14, DJ Muggs on Tue. Feb. 16, Mixmaster Mike on Wed. Feb. 17, Young MC on Thu. Feb. 25 and DJ Pump on Sun. Feb. 28. The rest of the world can only sit and drool. Tickets are available @ Club Zone 66 Water Street, Vancouver (Gastown) BC

Inner Circle :: Commodore Ballroom :: Fri. Mar. 5

December 29, 2009

An Inner Circle show may not sway your opinion on them, but there's one thing that everyone has to admit: it's damn impressive at how these guys have been constantly putting out albums since 1974. -D.P. Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3‎ Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club :: Commodore Ballroom :: Sat. Mar. 6

December 22, 2009

Releasing their new album, Beat the Devil's Tattoo, on March 9, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are rolling through North America with a tour showcasing their latest in garage/post-punk-revival. And you know what? After a constant stream of solid releases (ok, fine, maybe except that messed up Effects of 333 last year) we can't wait. -D.P. Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3, Canada Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

Passion Pit :: Commodore Ballroom :: Sun. Apr. 11

January 28, 2010

Pitchfork sweethearts, Passion Pit are more than just hype; they're actually worth something musically. Sure, they may not be revolutionary, but hell, doesn't mean they're not damn good. And the live shows show that there are actual humans behind those blips and beating beats. And what's more, they don't come off as those self-indulgent idiots MGMT, but rather as self-aware, kind, and excited at the fact that they're playing to people. Every live rendition is success and every audience member can walk home, will want to walk home and wish that Passion Pit's music and joy soundtracked their entire lives. And for at least that sweet moment of post-show bliss, it very well might. -D.P. Commodore Ballroom, 868 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3‎ Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

The Big Pink w/ A Place to Bury Strangers :: Venue :: Sat. Mar. 13

December 30, 2009

Screw The Big Pink. The bill should be listed the other way around. You're not seeing the Big Pink, don't even try to. But! you will go see A Place to Bury Strangers. And then, once your eardrums have been blown out, you're going to go home and thank God that such a noise band still exists. -D.P. Venue, 881 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K7 Tickets can be found @ Ticketmaster

NHL Party Club Bud :: Commodore Ballroom :: Sat. Feb. 20

February 08, 2010

Budweiser was unable to secure official sponsorship of Vancouver 2010, which went to Molson, however, that certainly hasn't stopped them from setting up shop at the prestigious Commodore Ballroom. As expected, smoking hot bud girls will be the official eye candy of the parties while bumping bosoms with celebrities and athletes is certainly a strong possibility as well. The NHL party will feature some of the top puck slappers the world has to offer and plenty of bud to celebrate, or commiserate, the day's results. Don't show up wearing your track suit though, the party will be fairly exclusive. 868 Granville Street Vancouver, BC V6Z 1K3 (604) 739-4550

Final Fantasy :: Vogue Theatre :: Sun. May 9

January 28, 2010

He's non-stop, isn't it? And isn't his actual stage name Owen Pallett. You know what he is, and there's nothing I can say to make you go or not go if you've made up your mind. (Go). -D.P. Vogue Theatre, 918 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1L2‎
